This may be due to anxiety, pain, other medications, evening exercise, depression or psychiatric disorders. The drug affects the chemicals in the brain that may have become imbalanced and caused insomnia. This drug is said to induce relaxation and induce sleep more rapidly keeping clients asleep longer. To prevent drug dependence, rebound effect or decrease in the drug effect, the drug should be taken intermittently and not for more than 1 to 2 weeks.
Ambien acts by binding to the benzodiazepine receptors, a major modulatory site of the GABA receptor complex. Modulation of the GABA receptor complex is said to be responsible for sedative, anticonvulsant, anxiolytic and myorelaxant drug properties. It has strong sedative actions but only minor anxiolytic properties. During short-term treatment (up to 10 nights) with Ambien at doses up to 10 mg, the most commonly observed adverse reactions were drowsiness, dizziness and diarrhea. Long term treatment of doses 10mg for 28 to 35 nights causes commonly observed adverse reactions as dizziness and drugged feelings. Other adverse affects are amnesia, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, abnormal thinking and behavior, back pain, ataxia, hiccups, confusion, euphoria, insomnia, vertigo, diplopia, abnormal vision. Some potentially fatal effects are Hepatitis, and anaphylactic reactions.
If any other drug taken is observed to cause drowsiness, inform the physician before taking Ambien. There is increased sedation and incoordination when taken with Tricyclic Antidepressants, haloperidol and alcohol.
Ambien should be taken exactly as prescribed and right before going to bed. Ambien should not be taken if the client drinks alcohol. Do not give Ambien unless the client can stay in bed for 7-8 hours. Advise the client not to drive or operate machines after taking Ambien unless they feel fully awake since accidents can be caused by sleep driving. This is driving when not fully awake and with the client not having any recollection of the event.
